According to the Order of Time
(Canada, in production)
16mm film
b&w & colour, sound
According to the Order of Time (Working Title) follows 80-year-old film and holography pioneer Al Razutis alongside young artists and curators Felix Rapp and Sidney Gordon, as they engage in a series of material and conceptual exchanges grounded in non-linear time—a layered structure in which past, present, and future coexist, repeat, and reshape one another.
Shot on 16mm film, the work documents repeated visits to Razutis’ studio, Visual Alchemy 2.0, a converted fisherman’s cabin on Saturna Island, where the collaborators conduct a series of experiments, learning the practice of holography within the fragile infrastructure of his remote studio.
This process begins with the construction of a makeshift sand table and hot-glued optical arrangements housed in Tupperware bins, restoring Razutis’s ability to work in a medium he had not accessed since the 1978 demolition of Visual Alchemy 1.0. As the project develops, it unfolds in close response to shifting health, technological, and environmental conditions as Razutis reaches the final chapters of his career, gradually limiting his visual work to the bounds of these collaborations.
Through observational footage, constructed holographic experiments, and reflective material treatments, According to the Order of Time (Working Title) sees experience as shaped through interference and recurrence, situating these processes within the collaborators’ daily conditions.
This project is in development.
